Steps of Animated movie Production (Part 1)

Step 1 | 3D Modeling
3D Modeling is not drawing!

... The character modelers will start modeling characters in 3D software’s. There are numbers of software’s you can use but the most famous ones are 3Ds Max and Maya and both are now owned by Autodesk.

Please make sure that software’s are not important but the technique behind is important as an artist you need to understand the flow of character modeling.

Please make sure about following points:-

a) Basic understanding of Human and any other character anatomy.

b) Mesh flow information in 3d Modeling.

c) The importance of the character in the film :-

Like , the hero and other main characters should be modeled with full details as they will be in front of the camera most of the time and the secondary and crowd character can be modeled with fast way as they will be hidden behind most of the time.

The screen appearance and importance of each character should be known by the character modeler.

d) 2D design with front and side view of the character.

e) The body structure of each character.

f) Nuances of each character.

g) Previz drawing of each character.

h) Any special facial characteristic of the character.

Remember that texturing and rigging of the character is depending on modeling, so make sure that you have a chat with you texture artist and rigger, if that is not possible then make sure that at least you have an idea of what kind of animation the character will perform in the movie and what sort of cloths they are going to be having in the movie.

CREATING PROPS

Most of people think that prop modeling is a part of background creation, but I think props should be separated out, so that the product modeling team or even the background team can think of these props separately.

The another advantage of this is that you can save the props in your props library and regularly you can use the props for any other project by just changing the shape or color or even sometime the same prop as it is.

The main important thing you should keep in mind is that your prop should be proportionate to your background means it should not look odd.

Make sure that you save your props separately with properly labeled folders so that in future you do not waste much time finding it than creating new.

You can build these props with textures or only models it’s up to the requirements as if the texturing team is separate then the modeling team will only concentrate on modeling the propsSee MoreLikeUnlike · · Follow PostUnfollow Post ·

Step 2 | UV Unwraping

The Process of UV Unwrapping comes after modeling and before texturing.
The result of UV Unwrapping is mainly depends on modeling of the object.
In this process we will represent a 3d model in a 2D image and this same 2D image we will use to color or texture any particular part of a 3D object.
...
Can you think of Unwrapping a gift box and again wrapping it, ok I think everyone done this at least once in their lives, so this is the same fundamentals of UV Unwrapping.
Now with such easy tools like UV unwrapping toolbar in 3Ds Max or Maya, it is very easy to do this.
But again this can be a very careful job if you are handling a complicated object or character.

UV Unwrapping will decide you texturing quality’s o make sure you do this write.
In the process of UV Unwrapping we separate U and V coordinates of a 3D object and place them like a plane, so that we can color them very easily in Photoshop.
Step 3 | TEXTURING AND MATERIALS

Textures and Materials are completely different terms, the explanation in easy words can be as follows:-

For example if you are building a wooden table in 3D and once you complete your modeling and texturing now at this point you need to apply correct kind of material and textures to your table so that it looks like a real wooden table.
... So the wood material is called materials which you have to apply from your material liberray of the 3D software you are using like in 3Ds Max or Maya you have a material Tab and once you apply the wood material and adjust the settings , then you need to apply right kind of colors and effects of a real wood and this process called as Texturing and you can do texturing in Photoshop and create texture maps for particular objects and then just apply these maps to the materials inside the material tab.

So in easy language we can say that texturing means colour of a particular object you you can easily create by suing Photoshop , its like applying paint.

And Materials is a property of an object which you need to set means if you have wood object the you need to apply the right kind of wood material to make that object like real wood or if you have glass object then make the properties of that object like a glass object.
Some of the common materials are :- Glass, wood, brick, metal, plastic.

I hope that I have explained Texturing and materials in easy language for a new person to get understanding of this part of the pipeline.
Texturing is very important as this will decide the quality of your movie. You have to set the texturing parameters in very early stage with your artist as this will also decide the era and mood of your movie.

Texturing is an artistic process which requires a lot of artistic and creative skills and the person with very goods knowledge of colors will do great job.

There are ready made texture libraries available in the market which will help you greatly with this job.

You can create your own textures in Photoshop very easily and apply them directly inside your 3D software.
Photoshop works seamlessly with 3Ds Max and Maya and other major 3D software’s.

But remember the quality of your texturing is mostly depending on lighting and rendering of your scene.
Step 4 | RIGGING AND SKINNING

After you have a character ready with texturing then it’s like your actor is ready and it’s like you have a finalized location and you now just need to direct the Actor and get the acting out of him , and to do this in 3D animation you have do a process called Rigging and Skinning.

Rigging means?????
... Rigging is the process where you make your 3d character ready for acting by applying required bone setup and controls .
It is a complex and technical process which requires a lot of understanding about anatomy ( Human or Animal ).
Like we have bones in our body through which we make movements same kind of bones we need to apply inside your 3D character and like our brain controls the movement of our body parts same in Animation we need to add controls for specific body parts to make the movements.

Facial Targets:-

For facial animation you need to add targets of the face with different expressions so that you can make the required movements of the face.
